Avea visits UH hoops
There’s plenty of work left to do to shore up Hawaii’s 2015 recruiting class, but that doesn’t mean new coach Eran Ganot can’t also think in the long term.
UH hosted former Kahuku multi-sport athlete Samuta Avea on an unofficial (not paid for by the school) visit over the weekend.
The 6-foot-5 Avea, now of Bingham High in South Jordan, Utah, is a burgeoning talent. As part of the Red Raiders’ supporting cast this past season, he averaged better than 12 points a game. He will be a junior in the fall and will be part of the class of 2017.
On his visit with his family, he was accompanied by Team Eleate co-founder Clint Parks, a Hawaii native who now lives on the West Coast. Parks helped Ganot, then a UH assistant, secure a commitment from Jordan Coleman back in 2009. Parks tweeted some of Avea’s visit here and here.
Star-Advertiser preps writer Paul Honda lauds Avea for his talent and character. Honda did a post about Avea a couple months ago.
It could be a while before Avea’s college destination is known — he has a while to make up his mind — but it’s encouraging to see Ganot making some headway on future classes this early into the game.

Just started, and making infractions already……June 15th after sophomore season guys…..come on man, info is on the internet……us tax payers will have to pay for these infractions….

Manu, every legit high school talent has been on the radar of top programs from junior high. They don’t wait until kid is junior in high school, if they do, they don’t think the kid’s that good.

Unofficial visits (paid for by the recruit and his family) are different in this respect; they are not subject to some of the other restrictions and may be made sooner in a high school athlete’s career. They may talk to coaches on campus as long as it’s not a dead period, which it isn’t right now. Coach Ganot is pretty meticulous about this sort of thing. If this helps, take a look at this.
i saw the signing of Sai Tummala- will he be on scholarship? he can help with depth but, with only one year left to play, and considering potential scholarship reductions as ncaa sanctions as well as his lack of output at the div 1 level, wouldn’t he be more worthy of an invited walk-on spot?
Just two more scholarships available; I hope it’s big bodies, that’s the bottom line.
